Objective :

With HKDEA's and HKPC's previous successful experiences in organizing the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards (HKDEEA), the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006: Digital Entertainment seeks to recognize and honour the best works produced in the digital entertainment industry in Hong Kong and to promote excellence in this field. In addition, one of the young companies will be specially awarded for the merit of the Best New Start-up Company.

The Awards will also encourage productions of good quality in the student stream, which aims to allow accomplished individuals or teams from the academics to participate in this campaign and demonstrate their talent.

Introduction to HKDEA:

The Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association (HKDEA) was established in 1999 as a non-profit making association comprised of digital entertaining corporations. It is dedicated to the betterment of the local digital entertainment industry. HKDEA's missions are:

  • To promote technology development within the industry in order to deliver internationally competitive products;
  • To explore and develop new markets;
  • To project a positive image associated with playing video games
  • To discourage software piracy; and
  • To facilitate communication and interaction between industries, including toys, entertainment and video games, which are associated with digital entertainment.

The HKDEA was founded during a time when there were relatively few local digital entertainment establishments. It was thus established to provide a mechanism upon which local developers could cooperate to ensure industry-wide prosperity.

Since its establishment, the HKDEA has organized a variety of activities and events including:

  • Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards
  • Conferences
  • Overseas Promotions (Hong Kong Pavilion in E3, ChinaJoy, MIPCOM)
  • Local Promotions
  • HKDEA Web Site building
  • Seminars and Training

Background of ICT Award:

Hong Kong ICT Awards: Digital Entertainment has been previously known as the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards. HKDEA and Hong Kong Productivity Council had been partners for four years in organizing the HKDEEA, which is recognized as the leading award for the digital entertainment industry in Hong Kong.

Local professionals with outstanding achievements in the digital entertainment industry have been honoured in the HKDEEA for the past four years. Since it was founded, entries had risen by 30% every year, totaling to over 220 entries. The judging panel consists of more than 30 prominent personnel from the industry, academics and related organizations.

In the last HKDEEA, there were 103 entries. Works of winners were showcased in international exhibitions and conferences, eg. E3, MIPCOM and FilMart, and gained very positive feedback from the local and overseas industry. HKDEEA has become one of the most important annual events for the digital entertainment industry.

Carrying this success over the last four years, HKDEA and Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Industry Supporting Centre (DEISC) are now partners in organizing Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006: Digital Entertainment, which is fully supported by the HKSAR government. There will be more award streams to reflect the professionalism of the award. Also, more professionals will be invited into the judging panel. The event will definitely be the main focus of the industry in 2006.
